Privacy policy

Last updated 3 October 2026

Unlit collects nothing, stores nothing about you, and sends nothing anywhere. The app does not request the internet permission, which means Android will not allow it to open a network connection at all. This is enforced by the operating system, not by a promise in this document.

That single fact covers every permission listed below. Whatever any of them can read, none of it can leave this device, because there is nowhere for it to go.

What Unlit does not do

  • No accounts, no sign in, no email address required
  • No analytics, telemetry, crash reporting or advertising SDK of any kind
  • No data is transmitted off your device, because the app has no network permission
  • No data is included in cloud backups. The app declares allowBackup="false"

What stays on your phone

Your settings, your pinned apps, your renamed and hidden apps, your friction rules and your daily open counts are stored in the app's own private storage on your device. No other app can read them. Uninstalling Unlit deletes all of it.

Permissions and why they exist

Home app. Lets the home button open Unlit. Without it the app has no purpose.

Usage access (optional). Android keeps its own record of how long you spend in each app. With this permission Unlit reads that record so the Since Unlit screen can compare the weeks before you installed it against the weeks since. The figures are read and displayed. One of them is also saved: your average daily screen time from the period before you installed Unlit, kept as a single number in the app's private storage. It has to be, because Android discards the detailed records it came from after about a week and the comparison would otherwise be impossible later. Nothing else is retained, no per-app figures are stored, and none of it can leave the device.

Notification access (optional). Unlit counts unread messages and missed calls so it can show a single line above your apps. It counts only. No notification title, body, sender or package name is ever read into storage or kept beyond the moment of counting. Three numbers are held in memory and they are gone when the app closes.

Do Not Disturb access (optional). Lets a focus session put the phone on Do Not Disturb and take it off again afterwards. It applies your own Do Not Disturb exceptions rather than defining new ones.

Accessibility, for the lock gesture only (optional). Android gives an app exactly one way to turn the screen off without discarding your fingerprint and face unlock, and that way requires an accessibility service. Unlit's service exists solely to perform that single action when you use the gesture you assigned to it.

It is declared with no accessibility event types at all and with canRetrieveWindowContent set to false, which means the operating system delivers nothing to it and it is structurally incapable of reading your screen, reading any text, or seeing which app you are in. That is a property of the service definition, not a promise. It is also not marked as an accessibility tool, because Unlit is a launcher and not an assistive technology.

The service is off unless you assign the lock gesture and grant it yourself in Android's settings. Revoking it stops that one gesture and changes nothing else in the app.

Vibrate, set wallpaper, expand status bar, request delete packages. Ordinary launcher permissions, used for haptic feedback, the wallpaper picker, opening the notification shade, and the uninstall prompt in the long press menu. None involve data.

Children

Unlit is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone, including children.

Changes

If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new date at the top. If Unlit ever needed to collect anything, which would require adding the internet permission, that change would be described here before it shipped.
